Greg's project will be at the American Legion Post 1682 in New City, NY. It will be in recognition of the Four Chaplains who perished on the Dorchester on February 3rd, 1943, during World War II. To recognize the heroic acts of the Chaplains, Greg will be installing a memorial plaque on a flat-faced boulder and will landscape the surrounding area.
Scouts should bring work gloves, a mask, flat shovels, and rakes as we will mainly be spreading mulch.
Lunch will be provided.
HISTORY
As the ship was traveling to Greenland with more than 900 military passengers, it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat, sinking the ship in less than 30 minutes. As the ship sank, they selflessly gave up their life vests to others and they could be seen linking arms and praying. The Four Chaplains all had different faiths: George Fox (Methodist), Alexander Goode (Jewish), Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), and John Washington (Roman Catholic). Greg's great-grandfather was one of the over 600 victims who perished on this ship. This project will remind and educate the members and public of the sacrifices of the Four Chaplains since not many people are aware of this historical moment.
