About the Event

EVENT FLYER

This is a great trip to learn how to go backpacking (if it is your first time) or you can help teach if you  are an experienced trekker!  Do you have questions about boots, the right backpack or sleeping bag to  take backpacking? Our Troop has experienced scout instructors (some who have been to Philmont) who can help!

Saturday:  The group will meet by the trailer at the Germonds parking lot at 7:30 AM (depart at 8:00am). After group gear and food are distributed, we will drive to the parking area at the Johnsontown Road circle (199 Johnsontown Rd, Sloatsburg, NY 10974) (41.17994, -74.16395) off the southwest end of Seven Lakes Drive.  Led by members of the PLC, we will hike to the Dutch Doctor Shelter.  At the shelter we will set up in the shelter or set up tents around the shelter.  Troop Guides and Instructors will have an opportunity to fulfill their leadership requirements by helping novice backpackers select sites and pitch tents.

There will be a side hike to see the famous outlaw Cladius Smith’s Den. Cladius Smith was a famous guerrilla leader during the American Revolution and we will visit his hideout. When we return to the shelter, dinner will be prepared and then there will be time to relax by the campfire.

Sunday:  After breakfast, the crew will hike back the same way to the pick up point at the Johnsontown  Road circle for pickup at 9:00 am. Rides to the drop off and pick up should be arranged prior to the  weekend.

Pack light and tight, remember that we will be carrying troop gear and food in addition to our own.  A list of required personal gear is available on Troop website:  fall backpack (troop97newcity.org). No cotton socks or cotton clothing.  MUST BRING WATER to drink and share for cooking.  Troop has backpacking tents that can be borrowed.

Please watch the forecast and pack accordingly.  Early October weather can vary and we will be going in all weather conditions.

Meals: The Troop will provide dinner and dessert for Saturday and a light breakfast Sunday.  SATURDAY:  Everyone should eat a good breakfast at home before leaving, bring lunch and healthy trail snacks. ***REMEMBER, NO NUTS or PEANUT BUTTER***

Everyone must also bring water to drink (1 to 2 liters) plus 1 liter to share for cooking.
